What is a tag cloud?

A tag is simply a keyword that you attach to a piece of information. For example, a blog post about your trip to Hawaii during Christmas might be tagged with tags like Christmas, Holiday, Travel, Hawaii and so on. In a way, tagging is like categorizing, only much more powerful.

A tag cloud is a way to visualize tagged data. Usually, it is presented as a cluster of tags, where the more important tags will be displayed with a larger font size and vice versa. This allows you to easily spot the most important information at a glance.

But why is that useful?

Let's say you have collected a big pile of DVDs over time and you'd like to find out what kind of movie interests you most. You could try to sort them into smaller piles according to their genres, but you'll soon bump into movies that belongs to more than one genre, and this is where http://www.istaggable.com comes into play.

Instead of categorizing your stuff, http://www.istaggable.com helps you to tag them with multiple keywords and visualize them in tag clouds. To demonstrate how powerful this technique could be, we have visualized the top 10 movies at IMDB – see what they have in common?

Of course, there are other uses for this as well. For example, if you tag a list of recipes with their ingredients, their common ingredients can then be easily spotted. If you tag some photos with the people in it, the camera hog will pop out. You can probably think of other interesting uses – so why don't you start tagging now? If you created an interesting tag cloud, don't forget to let me know at feedback@istaggable.com!
